Day 1: Cairo

A full historical day with the Sphinx, the Pyramids of Giza and the art of the pharaohs.

  • The Great Sphinx, a mythical figure with a human head and a lion's body, carved from a single block of limestone
  • Pyramids of Giza: the three great pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Menkaure, with smaller satellite pyramids built as tombs for the royal families
  • Egyptian Museum in Cairo, including the Hall of Tutankhamun's Treasures
  • Boat ride on the Nile (optional, $10)
  • Buffet lunch
  • Papyrus Institute
  • Transfer to the hotel, free time and dinner

Day 2: Alexandria

  • Departure from Cairo at 7:00, packed breakfast
  • Montaza Palace gardens, the summer residence of Egypt's last king, Farouk, set among palm trees
  • Roman Amphitheater, discovered by chance in 1959 during construction work
  • Qaitbay Citadel, home to a naval museum with exhibits from the Roman era and Napoleonic times
  • Library of Alexandria, with space for 8 million books, a manuscript restoration lab, a planetarium, three museums and four art galleries
